Encuentro Latino has excellent food at a great price! We started with the hot corn drink, which I highly recommend on a winter day in Michigan, it's almost like a meal by itself. We also shared a plate of fried plantains and for the entree I got the chapin combo, which includes a papusa, churrasquito, and garnacha of your choice.
The fish was superb - fresh and delicious, crispy outside, soft and juicy inside. Our waitress, Jocie, was cheerful, friendly and attentive. We will definitely go back!
Update: we came back again two weeks later to try some more dishes. They were all great - I particularly liked the chile rellenos, while my wife loved the chicken stew!
Update 04/25/2022: We came back again today and tried the fish and chile rellenos again today. Both were divine as always.
Guatemalan goodness is served here. If you want a good variety try the Chapin dish with 1 of each. Empanadas are super flaky with a philo dough texture. The space was a former diner with booths, super small but cute. Very friendly staff. No liquor licence but they have excellent, non-alcoholic bebidas. Enjoy
Why we waited so long to try this place is beyond me.... This place is a must try. We absolutely loved the breakfast. Guatamalin breakfast was such a hardy start to the day. Highly recommend. We can't wait to them again.
Lunch is also delicious
Outstanding food full of flavor. Staff super friendly. Had the ranchero breakfast and all the components of the meal combined wonderfully. My first time having Guatemalan cuisine and I am hooked!
Had plans to have dinner with a old friend and we were undecided on where to eat. I normally scroll through google to find something new or unique. After being informed of a 1.5 hr wait at Bellflower, we decided to give Encuentro a try. I am so happy Bellflower had such a long wait as Encuentro was successful in providing a delightful meal. I have horrible taste in design and decorating so I will make no judgement on the physical appearance of the restaurant. Quite frankly I was here for dinner not an ambiance.
I ordered the Chapin Combo, which consisted of three different items - one churrasquitos, one garnachas, and one pupusas. I would definitely order this again. We also tried the guacamole as an appetizer which came with chips and tomato sauce(I would compare this to a warm picante sauce/salsa of sorts). Whatever you want to call it, this stuff is good. Not sure exactly what makes it so good but I will say we took a 10 ounce container to go on our way out it was that good. The guacamole, although still enjoyable, was surprisingly not the star of the guacamole appetizer.
My friend ordered the beef tortilla de Harina and ended up taking half home. From the silence while the first half was consumed, I will have to speculate it was also good(I later confirmed my suspicions).
In summary, with full disclosure that I didn’t need to use the restroom , I will have to grant 5 stars and a guarantee to return when in the mood for some delicious Latin cuisine.
Went for the first time today. They have really done a great job of making over this little restaurant space. The food was excellent. The service was great. The server gave us samples of juices when we were unsure. Loved it. Edited to add:. Was there again today, a year later, and everything is still outstanding. Love the papusas.
We've visited several times and we always have attentive, super nice service, and excellent food. You know it's fresh when leftovers the next day are just as delicious!! One of our favorite places to eat!!
